role: The Smith of Space, assigned to the Land of Caves and Frogs, and a Prospit dreamer.
sylladex:REACTABLE MODUS - Based around the Reactable program; this modus spawns a Captchalogue Touchpad. Any and every item is assigned a specific combination of blocks and settings, resulting in a unique blend of sounds, which must be replicated for captchalogued items to be retrieved. Items can still be captchalogued normally, however messing around with different combinations can also result in ghost images if the items they match are not in the immediate vicinity.
(He originally used the BOOMERANG MODUS, which required cards to be thrown only to return as the item they held. While a useful modus to weaponise, he swapped it out after he nearly lobbed off his matesprit's head with a crowbar.)
strife portfolio:STAFFKIND - Essentially covers anything longer than a stick and remotely shaft-like, but blunt on both ends. This makes it a "sub"-specibus of Polekind, which covers ALL pole weapons, although it is still subject to change depending on the circumstances like other specibi.
WRENCHKIND - Wrenches! He throws them.
history
Emerging from the cave trials, Durrin was chosen by an emu lusus and together they built a hive somewhere in Alternia's plains: a hollowed out hill, with plenty of rooms open to the Alternian sky and full of passages. Away from the noise of other grubs, it was during construction that it was discovered that Durrin doesn't take silence well, when he accidentally got separated from his lusus while exploring deep underground. Eventually he was relocated, talking himself hoarse in an attempt to hear something, and the hive's design was altered so that wind across the plains will also travel through the tunnels in a manner so that the interior was never silent.
Fascinated by the sounds the wind made in and around his hive while growing up, he would often travel around with his lusus in search of other "good vibrations", go so far as to explore other tunnels and caves. It was during these explorations that he stumbled quite literally upon records of the Sufferer's teachings and ordeal, left behind by some unknown troll many sweeps ago. While hesitant to even believe what he found, it sparked his curiosity to have come across lengthy references to what was widely accepted as superstition.
Keeping his discovery secret - true or not, there was something about what he read that left him feeling that caution was necessary - he began to research about Alternian history and how their culture came to be. With the seed of doubt already planted in his head, he began especially to question the validity of the current caste system and its relevance to modern times. His travels allowed for opportunities to socialise with other young trolls, and he became aware that while there was often a latent adherence to the hemospectrum, it was also not uncommon for trolls at least have acquaintances across the board. He began to dream up ideas for how society could be improved, but was smart enough to keep them to himself. Instead, he integrated some of them into his budding interest in engineering, making devices that could help improve way of living alongside his more self-indulgent trinkets, and remained open-minded about who he maintained relationships with.
It was through one of his neighbours, a yellow blood aspiring to be a Virtuosoujourner (the troll equivalent of a singer) and with a voice to match, that Durrin met Ridian Orinna, a blue blood with whom he would eventually enter a matespritship with and affectionately dub with the pet name, "champ". It was also through the same yellow blood that the boys were introduced to and essentially roped into playing SGRUB.
Entry into the Medium proceeded with little trouble apart from the usual hive-destroying and lusus-killing shenanigans, with Durrin's server player helping to prototype Emudad after he died in a cave-in. As the implications of the meteors raining down on Alternia and the world-destroying nature of the game became more apparent, Durrin would briefly wonder about the implications this would have on what remained of their society, reduced to the participating players, before brushing aside the thought for a less pressing time to muse over and hurring to make sure none of his tools or machines would be left behind.
Once all the players were in, their session progressed relatively smoothly, as everyone became more familiar their game-given powers and more violent tendencies were either being kept in check or being diverted on to the underlings populating each land. Teaming up with his matesprit, Durrin managed to light the forge (which had been hidden below ground beside his hive before being transported with him to the Land of Caves and Frogs) and had just begun the business of breeding the Genesis Frog when the glitch snatched him out of his own session and into this one.
personality
For a troll bordering on being a blue blood, Durrin is a fairly placid individual, if a little on the quiet side, and an over-all friendly guy by troll standards. That's not to say he's above poking and pushing people's buttons for fun like your average troll, because he isn't - in fact, he's fond of peppering his speech with made-up words (specifically Australian Strine for us human readers) because he gets a kick out of people's confusion, especially when he delivers it all with a straight face and they can't tell if he's being serious or not - but he's rarely as vicious as he could be. He's also generally willing to lean an ear to a friend, although he lacks the motivation to meddle in people's affairs enough to be a true auspistice and deliberately tries to avoid being drawn into ashen quadrants when he can.
Slow to anger, most insults just roll off his back since he finds attempts to rile him up funny: the only reponse he might give is a laugh to your face or nothing at all. He will, however, pap you with his staff if he finds you are starting to be irritating; to continue after this first warning ensures that things got steadily downhill from there.
It's not unusual for his quiet nature, his penchant for nonsense words and his occasional habit of trailing off in the middle of talking to cause him to be mistaken for a push-over and/or slow, when the truth is, he's often busy thinking. Have a conversation with him long enough and one may notice that he is in fact careful with his words, keeping his thoughts and ideas to himself unless prompted sufficiently. Even then, how much he is willing to divulge depends on how close the relationship is.
After all, you have to be guarded if rumours getting around that you're a follower of the Sufferer's teachings can and will get you culled.
With a fascination for how things work, how things came to be, Durrin is interested in both Alternia's past and its future. Being exposed to the Sufferer's ideals lead him to believe that the hemospectrum-based class system is outdated and that trolls should work towards true class equality ... while being well-aware that it would be an extremely difficult task. However, he's still willing to contribute to that goal, however long it takes, so for the time being, he harbours his more dangerous ideas inside himself and does his best to get along with other trolls regardless of their blood colour, in his own mild-mannered, slightly teasing way. He hones his engineering skills by tinkering with machines and devices, aiming for a spot in the ranks of the Munitioneers to see if he can do or learn anything useful from the "inside", as he puts it. All things considered, he remains remarkably optimistic that things will improve for the better some day, so long as he doesn't remain passive about it. Or gets himself culled.
It helps that he also does it for enjoyment, having a genuine love of learning and a curiosity for how things can be put together or taken apart. He claims to be a multitasker when really, he just shuffles between his numerous projects depending on what fancies him at the time, although he earnestly tries to complete them, his staff being the product of one such endeavour. Upon entering the Medium, he was reluctant to take full advantage of the alchemiter and only resorted to it out of necessity for speed.
More than anything, however, Durrin is an audiophile. He has a deep fascination for "good vibrations", in particular natural, ambient sounds and occasionally people's voices, that sees him often settling down somewhere to just listen. It's one of the rare times when he's not thinking, allowing his mind to go blank to fully appreciate the audial experience. He trusts his instincts, or rather his auricular sponge clots when more reliable, logical options are unavailable. This is, in part, one of the reasons why he is both a good listener and a poor auspistice: while he enjoys listening to people talk (some more than others), he dislikes the "noise" that accompanies budding blackrom couples and prefers to leave them to their own devices.
Silence is one of the few things that unnerves him, and he gets noticeably more agitated the longer he has to fill it himself.
abilities
Durrin has some talent for taking mechanical things apart and either putting them back together or making something new and useful from the parts. (Whether he finishes something once he's started is another story.) He is an expert in stick-fighting, coupled with a mean throwing aim.
As the SMITH OF SPACE, Durrin's powers lie with the manipulation of physical space, interacting with his element as though it were a solid object when he chooses. This includes such powers as walking through air as one might the ground by solidifying the space beneath his feet, or "teleporting" from one space to another by essentially pulling Point B towards him (or vice-versa) while he stands at Point A.technique
